The difficult work of understanding the journey

We’ve come to it then.

that part of recording for 5 straight days where I realize I am not as “in shape” as I’d like to be as a musician. This is normally when fear, negativity, and worry show their face. And oh how they have so far today.

But, it’s important for me to keep things in perspective and remember that each step is a part of a bigger process for me as an artist. This is true of all of us. When we face a wall, or an obstacle that challenges our perception of the reality of where we are as an artist, the first instinct for me is to think I haven’t progressed at all and that I haven’t grown. Yet, more often than not the reality is actually that I have progressed to a point where what I have been doing isn’t internally satisfying me and I am actually just challenging myself to try and tackle a new hurdle.

The next time you hear the faint hint of failure begin to surface in your mind, remind your self of the process of growth and how its always changing to suit you where you are. This has helped me stay positive throughout the recording process.

A quick thought on simplicity.

I’m listening to Nolan mix some comps together of the songs we did yesterday, and I thought it would be nice to share an idea that has come up a few times over the course of tracking this record. That idea being that by limiting yourself as an artist you could actually be creating room for you to be you.

As Nolan and I set out to track these songs I was really into this idea of over simplification. I wanted to track the whole thing live, not have anything but guitars bass and drums, all these grand idealistic concepts. Granted, that was over ambitious of me and once we started tracking it became obvious that we weren’t going to have the time to do that, and it wasn’t right for these songs. But, one thing that did remain was this over arching idea of simplicity.

We have routinely caught ourselves adding more and more tracks, or we might go into reason and grab a sound from a bank and start tinkering. Eventually we just realize what we are doing, and say “yeah, that’s too much…”

Having a clear understanding of simplicity, and a clear trust in each other in the studio has made things feel really good so far. I don’t think this idea applies to every artist, or every art form, but for me it’s been a refreshing step in my creative journey as a songwriter and artists.
